Empowering Young Minds: Mental Health Awareness Workshop
Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet it often goes overlooked—especially in communities of color. Recognizing this, Sisters Charlene Martin and Marilyn Burks recently led an engaging and impactful Mental Health Awareness Workshop for the IVY Girls, creating a safe space for open discussions, research, and self-care strategies.
Exploring Mental Health Through the Lens of Black Excellence
During the workshop, the girls worked in groups to research and learn about prominent African American women who have been open about their mental health journeys. These women—Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka, Rihanna, and Coco Gauff—have used their platforms to advocate for mental well-being, challenging the stigma surrounding mental health conversations. Their stories highlighted the importance of prioritizing mental wellness, setting boundaries, and seeking support when needed.
Sharing Personal Strategies for Mental Wellness
Beyond learning about these influential women, the girls also had the opportunity to reflect on their own mental health practices. They shared personal ways to relieve stress, manage anxiety, and maintain a balanced mindset. From journaling and listening to music to exercising and spending time with loved ones, their ideas showcased the importance of self-care in everyday life.
Finding Peace Through Meditation
To close the session, Sister Marilyn Burks led the group in a guided meditation exercise. This calming practice helped the girls experience the power of mindfulness, deep breathing, and intentional relaxation. Meditation serves as a simple yet powerful tool to manage stress and stay grounded—a skill they can carry with them in their daily lives.
A Lasting Impact
This workshop not only educated but also empowered the IVY Girls to take charge of their mental health. By engaging in research, discussion, and self-care activities, they gained valuable insights into mental wellness and the importance of prioritizing their well-being.
